For me nothing beats GWT out there.

You're never going to please everybody. I think GWT does a good job of something that is technically very difficult. We're writing java that gets run natively in a browser as javascript, and you even get to debug in java. That's pretty amazing.
The author talks about anti-patterns without saying quite what he means. The article also contains at least one factual error. "even if you disable some browsers for local development you still are going to get the language permutations". This is just plain wrong.
