Compiling with pretty shows the issue.
if (!(Math.abs(x - y) < 0.0001))
gets turned into
if (Math.abs(x - y) >= 0.0001)
So when Math.abs(x - y) results in NaN the if always results in false.
In my mind this is a mistake because it doesn't accurately represent what is happening in Java. Is it enough to report it here or what should I do now?
