The need to be in the same package (unless you use @UiTemplate), but that does not necessarily mean they have to be in the same folder.
I personally like to put everything in src/main/java but YMMV; others prefer src/main/resources.
Anyway, this is a Maven/Gradle issue, GWT proper doesn't care (as long as both are somehow in the classpath)
