Maybe you have not pasted it but you did not provide a method parameter on the render() method for

<ui:with field='starImage' type='com.google.gwt.safehtml.shared.SafeHtml'/>

Without such a method parameter GWT will probably try to call GWT.create(SafeHtml.class) to get an instance for the <ui:with> field, which fails because there are no replace-with/generate-with rules for the SafeHtml interface in GWT.
