…or your client and server code live in different projects (for classpath isolation), which makes it impractical to use DevMode's embedded server.

AFAIK, GWT Eclipse Plugin has a way to start both a server (using Eclipse tooling) and GWT SuperDevMode with a single click. And this is probably the preferred setup (isn't that what Brandon shows in his videos?)
