GWT 2.6 requires Java 6. I don't remember when Java 5 support got killed, but given the release notes it seems that GWT 2.2 already produced warnings about using Java 5.
If I would need to guess I would say GWT 2.3 might still work with Java 5 but GWT 2.4 will probably not.
