I'd say your design is broken, and/or your assumptions on focus in the browser (and in GWT) are wrong.

First and foremost, there's nothing like "nested focus" ("is any of my child widgets focused?") in GWT (see https://code.google.com/p/google-web-toolkit/issues/detail?id=7186)
