what is the reason for not wanting to support ssl ? Its not that hard to open an ssl socket is it ? Am I missing something?

I would probably install a local http webserver/proxy (apache, nginx, etc) that talks https to the browser and forwards requests as desired to SDM / your servlet container / whatever.
