Thanks for  pointing that out but I'm still getting the same error message.
Some how maven libs are not available under WEB-INF/lib 


Are you launching a "mvn package" or "mvn war:exploded" at some point before trying the Run As… → Web Application?
AFAICT, this is (still) a required step.


How do you launch the mvn package through Eclipse?
