In XML there are different kinds of nodes. In your example between your XML tags you have text nodes containing the new line character because the XML is formatted.
-- Take a look at com.google.gwt.xml.client.Node and its constants. While iterating through a NodeList you should check Node.getNodeType() if it matches your desired node type.
