Can't you just debug the app using SuperDevMode? I mean the app starts as it makes server requests and changes the HTML tag. So you should be able to set a breakpoint and step through it.
-- A bit strange that it does not work but no JS errors are on the console. Maybe try GWTs UncaughtExceptionHandler and use some Window.alert() to display exceptions.
