SimpleDateFormat on server side

I am going crazy.. I need to convert a String into a Date.. I have this code:

data_inizio = "10/01/2014";

Date date = new SimpleDateFormat("dd/MM/yyyy").parse(data_inizio);

Window.alert("Date: " + date);

and the output is:

Date: Fri Jan 10 00:00:00 CET 2014

And DateTimeFormat is not supported by server-side. What i can do??
