More accurately, keypress is only about "printable characters", in all *but* Mozilla, where it's fired for each and every key event. Additionally, Mozilla fails to fill the charCode property of the event for the "enter" key.
It's however a total mess of incompatibility for repeated events, between browsers, but also for the same browser depending on platform.
