the solution is really simple:
Use resty gwt: https://github.com/chirino/resty-gwt

A sample project including GWT configuration can be found here:
http://code.google.com/p/play-gae-gwt-dreamteam-showcase

restygwt drives one of the biggest websites in Germany. We never had
any performance issues.
