another panel type probably suits better. So here is what I want to
do:

There is a vertical bar, and I would like to place some small images
inside of it. Some images should be aligned at the top, others should
be aligned at the bottom. But there is only one column of images.
Something like this:

| |
| |
| # |
| # |
| # |
+---+

The application is a chess game. The bar should be placed at the right
of the board. The images should indicate some game situations, e. g.
when a player offers draw there should be a white flag on his side. So
there is a player at the top and a player at the bottom, and the
images therefore should be at the top and the bottom.
