non-updatable widget

I'm new to GWT and working with legacy code (GWT 2.4) I am trying to update the value of a textarea using setValue  via a valueChangeHandler, but the textArea seem to be updated when I look in debug but not refreshing on screen, I have tried removing the textArea from the view but this also doesn't seem to update the screen,Does anyone have any pointers please
