left navigation bar used in Google search page

Hi all,
I want to develop a left navigation bar just like the one used in
Google search page?

I'm ok with having a panel with a list of Anchors in it, but I could
not find a proper way of placing icons before the anchors.

I inspected the Google search page, and saw that the anchor image
actually comes from a CSS sprite, through the "micon" class used by
the <span> element as below:

<a href="/images?..." class="q qs">
<span class="micon" style="background-position:-40px -85px"></
span>
Images
</a>

Can someone please describe how to do this using GWT.
thanks.
